TGIF

What a week, eh?  I've been indulging in numerous movies and seriels on Netflix and Amazon video, including a great seriel called Goliath starring Billy Bob Thorton.  It's one of those tales that lays bare the evil that we all fear, the notion that we are not in control and that dark forces will win.  Except, in this case, as with the story of David and Goliath, David prevails.  Otherwise, the whole game is an exercise in futility.

I'm ticking off my list of things to take to D.C. for the march.  While some may wonder at the usefulness of protest marches, I still hold hope that they matter.  I've been protesting in the streets since 1974, even taking my young daughter to a march, in her stroller, to protest the first Iraq war.  Alongside me was a friend who was 80 something years old at the time.  We pissed people off who were just trying to drive home from work, as we clogged a main street in Santa Cruz.  Luckily, no driver took it upon themselves to charge through the crowd.  I believe in protest, but I am also very cautious and don't go looking for trouble during these actions.  There is news, rumors really, that agitators will be in D.C., and we will be on the look-out for them.  I'm going prepared, as if on a week-long back packing trip, and I hope I am thinking of every contingency.

Ted and Steve on our way to Yosemite, 2014
The insanity of the week was buffered by our viewing of the concert of Leonard Cohen in London (wow wow and wow) and watching the documentary of our friend photographer Ted Grant.  Ted has had one heck of an interesting life, and this film is inspirational.  Ted is beloved by his countrymen, and well beyond.  He remains, to this day, a humble and sweet man who is happy to share his stories and lessons learned to eager photographers who seek his counsel.  One just feels good in his presence.

So, do yourself a favor and watch something inspirational, because, after all, everybody knows.

"Everybody Knows"

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows

  1. I wrote down Goliath as I hadn't heard of it. I haven't had a lot of energy for finding inspiration. I have been watching a cable channel called AHC (I think) anyway it's documentaries like one was on the Civil War. Last night it was the rumored power behind it all-- secret societies. It went into like the Illumunati or Alchemists (influencing supposedly our Revolutionary War and founding fathers). I was most interested in the alchemy one as I am married to a chemist and when I did sculpture, I did a lot of thinking about sacred geometry for how a shape can offer something more than the obvious for power. The thing interesting about the view on AHC was they more or less put down the reality of the secret societies but did present the views some have regarding them. I like that kind of approach where it offers the possibilities but doesn't demand you believe them. I know the so-called documentaries aren't often more accurate than our news but the distance helps :) I usually check all of them on the Civil War

  2. We've been tuning out the news of the day and watching a few things on Netflix to balance the insanity of our times. I'll be thinking of you while you are in DC, protesting that insanity. A friend posted this on Facebook. In case you haven't already seen it:
From a friend: If you're going to DC, Boston or elsewhere to take part in peaceful protest, here are some good tips:
Keep your cool. Do not offer personal information to unsolicited requests. Stay to the edges of the crowd. Have a meet-up-if-you-get-separated plan. Do not count on your cellphones. Write important information on your forearm in Sharpie. It will wash off eventually. Stay hydrated and never pass up an opportunity to use a toilet. And, for goodness sake, wear the right shoes and don't carry anything you can't lose. LISTEN to the energy and calmly leave if you have any doubts about anything.
